NIC Annual Report Centers on Branding Strategy

NIC Annual Report Cover The once-a-year occasion to send a corporate message to investors is a rare opportunity to make a statement, both verbally and visually about the status and direction of the company. The occasion is often a paradox. If the company is doing well, can you look too successful? If earnings are not as expected, will a look of prosperity appear improper?

NIC Annual Report Spread

NIC is the nation's largest provider of online government services and has 18 states under contract, including Utah. In keeping with a positive bottom-line, the modern8-designed 2002 Annual Report was less austere than last year, but still restrained compared to many. The message of the report focused on the recently implemented branding strategy, "the People Behind eGovernment". We photographed employees of the NIC subsidiary, Utah Interactive, added them to photos of other employees of the Kansas City company and featured them throughout the publication. Quotes from the employees elaborated further on the company culture.

While attending college 30 years ago Randall Smith, modern8 Creative Director, designed a logo for his father's Podiatry practice. The logo remained unchanged following his father's retirement and adoption by his brother, Terry Smith, also a Podiatrist. At least until this year, when a new treatment by modern8 made the graphic jump to the 21st century.
