AIGA Get Together Logo

The Western Regional Get Together of the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) invited Randall Smith, modern8 Creative Director to speak at their conference in Las Vegas April 17. Speaking on the subject of the "Value of Design and Advertising", the meeting was attended by officers and directors from AIGA chapters in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada. Accompanied by modern8 Programmer/Designer Justin Milo, Randall played pool in Vegas while Justin played Texas Hold 'Em.

Remody Motel
The package design that modern8 created for the Remedy Motel CD won an award as one of the best pieces of design or advertising created in Utah during the last year. The Salt Lake chapter of the AIGA each year selects 100 pieces for recognition and presents the awards at a banquet and ceremony, held this year on April 29 at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake. The CD package will be part of an exhibition at Weber State University and be published in a book later this year.

ipodPeer recognition is always nice, but the above awards ceremony resulted in more than that, when Randall Smith, modern8 Creative Director, won a random drawing for an iPod Mini. Just prior to the announcement, Randall commented to his wife "I deserve to win that iPod." No evidence has yet surfaced to warrant the comment, but Randall is accepting nominations for which color to choose.

3 Branding Options

The key concept in managing your brand is that everything the corporation does, says, owns, and produces should clearly relate to what the corporation is and what its aims are. To do this, make certain the ways the brand manifests itself are consistent in purpose, performance and appearance. This outward consistency is really only possible if it expresses an inner consistency based on a vision or central idea that guides the company and gives it value and purpose. The central idea is the Brand Contract. It manifests itself in three areas that you can see and one that you only feel:

products and services - what you make or sell

environments - where you make or sell it

communications - how you explain what you do

behavior - how you relate to your employees and the outside world

HCI LogoThe logo is the most important visual representation of your brand. Recognizing that importance, HealthCare Insight (HCI) recently engaged us to redesign their identity. HCI is a Utah firm that provides insurance fraud detection service for health care claims. We maintained some of the visual equity from the former logo, simplified the presentation and improved legibility. The new identity has been applied to the design of stationery and business cards in addition to tradeshow displays and flyers.

HCI LogoFollowing up on the original design of their logo and menus in 1999, Sampan Chinese Cuisine asked us to revamp their menus adding new items and prices this year. Graphics that depict the oriental philosophy of the five elemental energies: metal, wood, water, fire and earth are stylized on the cover. Different sizes and colors distinguish the lunch and dinner versions of the menu.
