![]() Precast concrete products often grow out of the need to do something with the left over ready-mix cement that comes back after the completion of a job. Owell Precast has built a long list of products and related companies out of that simple idea, everything from window wells to stadiums. (They can even rent you a billboard.) We developed a new identity for Owell that graphically reinforces the nature of the precast business and applied it to stationery and business cards with brochures and pocket folders in the works. ![]() Only a few weeks before the March 30 unveiling of the John Stockton statue that now stands outside the Delta Center, Brian Challis called up and said he needed new business cards for Challis Studios. He felt like he might be passing out a few cards when the completed sculpture of the former Utah Jazz player was installed and viewed by the public for the first time. Much of Brian's sculptured art is more abstract than the representational statues of Stockton and the still-in-progress Karl Malone. The logo we designed captured that spirit and was blind-embossed on the completed business cards and stationery. We delivered the cards right to the Delta Center as scheduled, only two hours before the actual event took place. ![]() Everyone has design abilities. We all make decisions about arrangements and combinations of clothing and furniture. It is clear from the often very competent design work of school children, that design ability is an inherent trait. In modern industrial societies this is typically limited to the selection of available goods that have already been designed by somebody else, like when you rearrange your living room. In older, especially non-industrial societies, there is generally no clear distinction between professional and amateur design abilities and there may be no such thing as a professional designer. In craft-based societies, craftspeople make objects that are both utilitarian and beautiful, and would appear to possess high levels of design ability. However the ability is not individually based, but rather a developmental tradition shared by the group and evolved over a long time. Knowledge about design is certainly not exclusive to professionals. Nonetheless, as Nigel Cross, editor of the journal Design Studies, has said, "I believe that there is enough evidence to make a reasonable claim that there are particular, 'designerly' ways of knowing, thinking, and acting." Creatively trained individuals can bring a different approach to problem solving. The Yescozette is a promotional magazine that we've produced for Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO) for over eight years. The oversize 11x14 publication is sent to customers and 1,200 employees of the 85 year-old privately held company. We develop a theme for each issue based around a marketing message and then design, write and direct the photography and printing. The current issue highlights maintenance agreements that keep signs in excellent condition. Like almost everything else in life, signs require ongoing care and attention. Maintenance agreements are an important revenue source for YESCO and the success of the service is built on relationships.
