This year we went all out on our annual tradition of designing holiday T-shirts. Perhaps inspired
by the opening of the modern8 Gallery, we took a more artistic approach to the design and printing
than in past years. This year there are three designs, each
created by a different designer, and without blatant company identification. We hand silk-screened
each shirt in our own office. The results are unique and show more personal expression. If you're
a client and didn't get one, let us know. If you're not a client, we've got a few left over, but
not all designs in all sizes. They're American Apparel brand, fashionably snug fitting, Men's and
Women's sizes S, M, L, XL and 2X. If we counted the time we put into creating them, we'd have to
sell them for $300 each. Incredibly, they're only $7. Email design
selection, size and gender, if interested.

For years we've been preaching to our clients the gospel of positioning — differentiate and focus,
focus, focus — the very substance of a strong brand platform. Differentiation works because of the
human tendency to categorize everything. It's our response to information overload. We remember that
which is different. A focused brand knows exactly what it is, why it's different and why people want it.
We've taken our own medicine. We believe we can be number one in a smaller category, instead of number
ten in a larger one. With the aid of industry consultant, Tim Williams, we've
recently concluded the same process we help our clients with: specialization.
Our new specialization has no effect on current clients, no matter what the industry, inasmuch as
this is a marketing initiative, it influences only what work we seek, not what we accept.
modern8 and our predecessor firms have a long history working for clients in the commercial building
industry, from architects to construction companies. We've created websites, brochures and identities
for some of the biggest players in the Intermountain states. Our concentration in the industry has
led to a strategic initiative to leverage those strengths.
modern8 is a brand design agency focused on the commercial building industry. We help companies
that provide products and services for custom building projects. We repair and refresh tired
brands, or develop new ones, by defining and designing the primary elements: the identity system
and how it is expressed through literature and online communications. All with the goal of helping
clients in the building industry communicate what makes — or can make — their organization remarkable.
We welcome your input as we begin the new year with a new focus on what we know and do best.
