An annual tradition going back to the early 90’s, modern8 has
again designed and distributed a new T-shirt to clients during
the holidays. Some kind of funky-retro-bird design by modern8
designer Bryan Wilson was reproduced on black and pink shirts
this year. The shirts are made by trendy American Apparel in
100% fine jersey cotton in women’s form-fitting sizes S - XL
and men’s M - XXL. If you’re a modern8 client and didn’t get
one, let us know. If you’re not a client, but wished you were,
we can remedy that -- or alternately, we’ll sell you a shirt
for the ridiculously low price of $6.50 plus a buck for shipping.
Email us the particulars.

Every few years, starting in Christmas 1987, Diane Smith has
collected a number of her current favorite recipes for distribution
to friends and family during the holiday season. Diane is the
wife of modern8 Creative Director, Randall Smith. It’s Randall’s
responsibility to design and produce the recipe book (as well as
to happily consume the results of recipes). This year’s low fat
theme is accentuated with his hand-drawn illustrations and
lettering. Diane has given permission for eNews readers to
download a copy of the
12-page booklet in PDF form.

UTA has told us that construction of the TRAX extension down
our street (2nd South) will commence sometime in January or
February and will eliminate on-street parking. It will impact
visiting clients, vendors and some employees. Officials are
working on alternate parking options for all the businesses
on the street, but we haven’t heard what they are yet. We’ll
let you know when we get something more concrete. / The modern8
gallery will continue to exhibit the drawings, collages and
paintings of Justin Smith and Seth Calder through February 14,
although in a more limited display beginning mid-January. Some
works were sold and others are required to return with Justin
to New York where he continues his education at The Cooper Union
for the Advancement of Art and Science. / Our office, down the
street from Gateway, has room available for shared office space
with all the equipment, connections and conveniences in place. Please
email or call 801-355-9541 to make an appointment to take a look around.

I bought my son a digital camera for Christmas. Although it looked good after un-wrapping,
a little online research showed alternatives with more features and better reviews for
the same price. We took it back. Web research has become the customer’s de facto
solution for finding information in a no-pressure sales environment. It’s what we
do before we call or visit (sometimes even after.)
Your Web site should easily answer the questions that potential customers frequently ask.
Simple Web site usability testing can help you understand if your site is doing its job.
Ask your sales and support people what questions they get most often. Write seven to ten
questions and hand them to an existing or potential customer. Put him or her in front of
your Web site, stand back and don’t say a thing. You’ll be tempted to point out, “Did you
see that little button over there?” -- but don’t. Simply tell the individual to do what
they’d do if they were by themselves at their home or office. Don’t be surprised if you
need to change your Web site after you’ve tried this a few times.

On a cold day in December Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO)
launched a hot new website
designed by modern8. YESCO is a 1,200-employee firm with multiple
services and products offered through offices and divisions
spread across the Western United States. The first challenge we
faced was how to bring the different divisions together into a
unified online solution. Previously, some divisions maintained
their own sites, which led to a fractured brand image and destination.
We developed Flash animated icons for each division prominently
displayed on the home page, guiding the user to the most likely
resource for the widely varied information available on the site.
Flash animation was also used on the home page to feature new and
iconic signs, but the site was developed in traditional HTML, best
suited for search engine optimization. Ajax kept the animated menu
navigation also HTML-based.
With many divisions of the company charged with keeping content
freshly updated, the Web site features a comprehensive content
management system. The system allows any authorized employee to
make changes to the Web site without technical skills or know-how.
Independent of the host server, the content management system is
accessible by any web-connected computer, allowing changes to be
made at any time.
