![]() In addition to modern8 Creative Director, every year Randall Smith also assumes the title of Adjunct Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Utah Art Department. Consistently teaching on the History of Graphic Design (and sometimes other subjects), Randall's 18-year teaching assignment has brought inspiration, internships and employees to modern8. The headline on the brochure describing Salt Lake County volunteer opportunities to assist the aged reads like something for another demographic. "I'm the fastest... growing age group", explains why the County needs help with transportation, meals and other activities for the elderly population that will increase 159% in the next 25 years. modern8 recently helped the County Aging Services with branding and design of three new publications.
In an article in the New York Times titled "Don't Call It a Store, Call It an Ad With Walls" we learn that in the retail environment, "the goal is to generate an emotional moment between a consumer and a brand... It sounds a little goofy, a little abstract, if you talk about it too much. The big challenge is to dimensionalize the aspects of a brand - what a brand is, who it wants to be - and use the visuals to support the story about that brand you want to tell." More... Maralee Lassiter, modern8 Senior Designer has been appointed to the Utah Commemorative Quarter Dollar Coin Commission, a group of nine individuals designated to choose the look of the new Utah-themed quarter to be issued by the U.S. Mint in 2007. / Our office, just down the street from Gateway, has room available for shared office space, with all the equipment, connections and conveniences in place. You can view photos of the office online. Please email Randall Smith or call 801-355-9541 to make an appointment to take a look around. |

Rising in its place is what I call the Conceptual Age, an era in which mastery of abilities that we've often overlooked and undervalued marks the fault line between who gets ahead and who falls behind. This shift - from an economy built on the logical, sequential abilities of the Information Age to an economy built on the inventive, empathic abilities of the Conceptual Age - has three causes: Asia, automation, and abundance." More... The Wired magazine article, titled "Right Brain Revenge", reinforces the importance in today's business world of using the brain's right hemisphere, much the same as December's column in Connect magazine, written by modern8 Creative Director, Randall Smith. More... Trade shows are yet another touch point for communicating the brand promise in an environment where the customer is actually looking to be sold. The primary message in too many trade shows booths is only brand identification, with little emphasis on why the customer might be interested. Verti-Crete, which produces molds and forms for the pre-cast concrete industry, asked us to help communicate their brand promise in a new 20 x 10 foot trade show display. The full-height graphics introduced their proprietary technology that creates panel and post systems for privacy walls and fences. The results mimic costly stone masonry, but with quick installation and affordability.
