The modern8 Gallery opens a new exhibit of photo/graphic interpretations of "Industrial Landscapes" by qi peng and a 30-year collection of old sign photography by Randall Smith on November 16th. The exhibit continues through January 11th. (Images attached).

Qi Peng was born in Queens, New York in 1976. He received his masters degree at Yale University. Peng is a conceptual artist who works with wide-ranging media from traditional drawings to abstract, industrially influenced paintings to photographically based collages. Peng, who is currently living in Salt Lake City, also has paintings and sculptures presently being displayed at the IAO Gallery in addition to his works on paper and digital/video media represented by atelier 180, also in Salt Lake City.

"Graphic designers are inherently drawn to environmental typography because they work with type all day long. In the environment though, type often takes on three-dimensional characteristics, adding a extra dimension to the more typical designer's 2-D world. Add to that the nostalgia associated with old signs, like unique or out-of-date typefaces and it's no wonder designers love shooting photos of old signs. I started when I was in college 30 years ago and this represents a few of my favorites." Randall Smith holds bachelor’s degrees in both advertising and graphic design from the University of Utah. He is the Principal and Creative Director at modern8, a Salt Lake brand design agency. He was the founding President of the Salt Lake chapter of AIGA, the American Institute of Graphic Artists. Smith is an Adjunct Professor in Graphic Design at the University of Utah, and has taught design classes at Brigham Young University and guest lectured at other schools.
