September Exhibiting Artist

This month at the modern8 Gallery we are featuring two artists; Anthony Siciliano and Mark Biddle.

Anthony Siciliano's primary working methods are collage pieces on 'paper, wood, printmaking, and canvas.' The process begins with photography, usually combining his own photographs together with found images or text. "Bringing these pieces into the computer, I can layer them over one another and combine the fragments together to create new juxtapositions. By arranging and layering objects within the collage, I hope to create a visual language that speaks of no particular time period, but rather recontextualizes the imagery within my experience and to a shared past. Regardless of where I begin, the work tends to deal with the issue of time. The weathered and aged surfaces are based upon the materials I utilize." Born in Salt Lake City, Siciliano graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art-Photography from Weber State University and with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography from Arizona State University. He currently works as an Academic Mentor in the Visual and Performing Arts, Ethics, and Literature domains at Western Governors University and as an Adjunct Faculty Instructor at Westminster College and Salt Lake Community College. He has also received several awards and honors including the Utah Arts Festival Board of Director's Award of Merit.

Mark Biddle currently serves as a co-coordinator of the program in Visual Communication at Weber State University. His work, which uses type, photography and drawings, is probably best described by the artist. "The assemblages that began [for me] in the late '90's have become an effective way to weave together the disparate threads of daily existence. A few collected items are enough to begin. From there each piece sort of accumulates its way towards resolution." Mark Biddle is a Utah designer, raised and educated in the Midwest. Biddle tries to "re-measure the value of things, looking into the transition zones for overlooked detritus more interesting than the objectives, which produced it." He finds that "recycled messages are a common interest and texts often grow out of every day situations. Form is experienced more directly and often works better than intellection to produce a transcendent moment. It taps a deeper root. The noise of daily living gets loud but seldom hits any perceivable peak. It's exciting to push the cacophony to a suitable mutation."
