A four-fold increase of sales leads over last year’s tradeshow was good
news to Quansys Biosciences. We collaborated with Politis Communications
to revamp the Quansys corporate identity and collateral materials, in
addition to a streamlining their corporate message to more effectively
reach potential customers. Quansys Biosciences is a Logan, Utah-based
company that develops multiplexed protein arrays to help medical
researchers better understand, diagnose and treat disease. We designed
the tradeshow booth, corporate literature and pre-tradeshow mailers, in
addition to revamping the identity, while Politis Communications
developed messaging and strategic direction.

We had a fun time finding and photographing cans of food from far away
places for the postcard we designed for the Utah Advertising Federation.
The postcard promoted the Salt Lake exhibition of the winning entries to
the Cannes International Advertising Festival. Held every June, the
Cannes Festival is considered the world’s most prestigious international
advertising competition. The Utah Ad Fed sponsored the exhibition. We
gave away most of the cans of food, but there are still a few no one has
taken. You’re welcome to the Greek calamari squid or the Chinese Ai Yu
Jelly if you’d like.

The Orbit Café across the street apparently couldn’t take the TRAX
construction any longer and closed down, at least until it’s all over.
But we can still do lunch at the Hong Kong Tea House right next door to
us. / Until the TRAX construction project is completed, parking in front
of our office will continue to be tricky. If visiting, we suggest
parking on 600 West, the nearest cross street, or alternately, in the
newly constructed parking lot behind our office, also accessed from 600
West. / For those of you who are still reading, you’re probably
sufficiently attentive to notice that this is the June newsletter, but
you’re getting it in July. We decided that these month designations are
just names — you know, without real significance. We may start referring
to each issue with a different name, like Tom, Dick or Harry. / Wish to
comment on what you read in the modern8 eNews? send us an
email. You write them. We’ll read them.

I remember a story told by Glen Mella, now president of Control4, of how
he attended a seminar where company executives were graded “Olympic
style” on their elevator pitch. Each participant delivered a 3-minute
pitch, about the time of an average elevator ride, while judges sat
ready with cards reading 7.0, 8.5, etc. Upon conclusion, the executives
were hit with almost instantaneous, gut-level grades on their pitch. It
was an intentionally stressful situation, not unlike real-life pitch
opportunities. Those that did best, were those who had practiced, maybe
even memorized, their pitch well in advance.
The June issue of Business Week magazine says the elevator pitch is far
too important to take casually. “Being able to sum up unique aspects of
your service or product in a way that excites others should be a
fundamental skill. Yet many executives pay little attention…” More

And so does the animated timeline we created for Young Electric Sign
Company, founded in 1920. The history of the family-owned company is
told in a graphically rich Flash-based timeline that begins with the
1895 birth of Thomas Young in England and takes you through to the
present day, with side-trips to Las Vegas, Ogden and the Salt Lake
Olympics. Bryan Wilson, modern8 designer, created this as the newest
addition to the award-winning YESCO web site, which we completed and
launched last December.
