In the first wholesale replacement since the business incorporated in
2001, modern8 has deployed a new website. The design approach is simple
and direct making usability paramount. In addition to a fresh look and
feel, the site incorporates new portfolio items and "About Us"
information. The home page prominently displays a recent project and
links to news items.

Taking a different approach from our first effort, we created the new
modern8 website in HTML instead of Flash, more often used by creative
service firms. We worked in the leading-edge HTML open standards
compliant code recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These
standards give websites more power, reduced maintenance costs and
increased accessibility. The use of cascading style sheets makes
frequent updates and additions much easier. The site was designed and
coded by Justin Milo, modern8 Senior Programmer with additional
implementation by modern8 Designer Bryan Wilson.

modern8 was featured on the long-running radio program "Speaking on
Business" with Fred Ball. The spot, which is sponsored by Zions Bank,
was broadcast three times daily throughout Utah and Idaho on May 18 and
described modern8 and our services to a general audience. You can listen
here.

Maralee Oleson, modern8 Senior Designer has been appointed to the Salt

Programmer Justin Milo has completed his first year at The Cooper Union
School for the Advancement of Art and Engineering in New York City. He
has created a Flash project for one his class assignments with a
Zen-like approach to design and content. / Our office, just down the
street from Gateway, has room available for shared office space, with

More than any other expression of your brand, your website presents the
greatest opportunity to communicate the personality and attributes of
your company. With movement, sound, color and image, no other medium
provides the sensory possibilities of the web. And yet brand
differentiation between one website and another is relatively weak
compared with differentiation in other mediums. Expressing authentic
brand identity on the web is still a new frontier that communication
professionals are just beginning to conquer.
Your company’s website is the next best thing to reality and in some
cases it is (or can be) more efficient, more user-friendly and faster.
It's often the first step in the sales process. Potential customers
prefer the no-pressure chance to learn about your company before making
the commitment to call, write or visit. Of course, at the click of the
mouse, a competitor is waiting. According to Alina Wheeler, a brand
identity author and consultant, “The best websites understand their
customers and respect their needs and preferences. A company's website
should quickly answer these questions: Who is this company? Why does
anyone need to know? What's in it for me?”

If spring is here so are annual reports. This year we created a 44-page,
perfect bound annual report for NIC, the nation's largest provider of
online government services, including those for the state of Utah. The
cover of the report asks the question, “What are you doing today?” We
answered it with photographs and stories of individuals in eight
different states from Maine to Idaho. Each story explains how the person
used the convenience of web-enabled applications developed by NIC to
facilitate interaction with government —“I’m lobstering” instead of
standing in line to renew a fishing license. “I’m spending time with my
patients” instead of manually doing criminal background checks. These
and five other online government services are case studies around which
we deliver the core value proposition of the company.
